Remember when CAFE required an act of congress?  Not any more. The
messiah has spoken and we will all be poorer and drive smaller, crappier
vehicles while paying more for them because he said so. The mustang will
probably end up as a turbo 4 cylinder mazda after all.

"The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama
administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to
be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet."

PS: there's no slippery slope.

I've seen the figures that the current POTUS has directed...even the
Japs can't meet that with all the required bling thrown in as standard
features.  Think of the OnStar, GPS, computerized bloatware, whatnot.
Throw in a stereo system with enough speakers to rival the Marshall
amp stacks, and the vehicle is more than simply a way to get from
point A to point B.

There is one way to get off foreign oil...get rid of motorized
vehicles and use horses (one show I saw on TV a while back featured a
guy in Arlington, TX who commutes with a horse).  Then the pavement
can revert to grass without ill effects on travel.  The only catch is
that PETA would file mass lawsuits.

I'm doing my part, I just spent the evening tweaking the rack on my bike
today so my panniers fit properly...

Yeah.  It'll become even more biased towards trucks than it is now.

And we'd be neck-deep in horse manure in no time.

We already are, fuguratively speaking...remember what comes out of the
mouths and hands of politicians.
