I have a 96 Ford F250 truck with a 5 speed and Powerstroke diesel engine. I
believe the transmission now has AT fluid in it but it seems to be that 90
weight gear oil would provide more cushion for the gears. Thanks in advance for
any help.

I have a friend with an early F350 and Powerstroke, he told me that
those ***s are supposedly fragile if you use anything other than the
synthetic ATF from your Ford dealer (at something silly like $20 a
quart) this guy does tow a lot so he's not taking chances with blowing
the ***.  He does have quite a few miles on it and it's still
going...  Now granted this is all anecdotal and third hand (he was told
this by his local dealer) but still, I figured I'd pass it on FWIW.

90 weight oil would be to thick in cold weather. Most all transmissions are splash lubricated (no pump) and the thick oil would not flow into the bearing surfaces. Maybe a synthetic 20W50 oil would work.

It would be best if you just stick with what the
manufacturer recommends.  In this case, I believe
the engineers probably know what they are doing.

If you put gear oil in that trans, you might not
like the shifting qualities when it gets cold.

EP90 to GL5 specification might well wreck the gearbox in short order
due to reaction with brass.

Yes, try to stick with the weight recommended by the manufacturer.

Still, you'll have to decide between the many brands which make that
weight/grade of oil. >;^)

Come back to us with a weight recommendation and some folks here may
have some more specific brand/type recommendations for you.
