what on earth was chosen first in show over a '47?

A couple of years ago, some fellow approached the guy who worked on my
car about buying his recently deceased grandfather's Beetle,  which had
been sitting in a barn for years. He described it as best he could
recall and remembered that it was quite old; Sam told him it was
probably valuable but that he needed more information. He left his
number and said he'd get back to Sam (mechanic). When Sam never heard
from him again, he called the fellow to be told that his cousin had
already retrieved and sold the car - which turned out to be a 49. At
that point, I think Sam was kind enough to not tell the guy what the car
was worth.

The  '47 was at our Car show in Pensacola, Fl  last year and was beat
out by a tie between a 1956 Oval Ragtop and 1957 Oval Sedan.
I was very impressed with the '47 but it had not been restored but was
the  most correct  split I had ever seen.
